Black Bear hunting in Maine begins in late August and runs for four weeks. We hunt the first two weeks and limit our guests to twelve hunters per week.

We lease 50+ bait sites per year and operate on more than 140 square miles of commercial woodland that borders more than 204,000 acres of wildlands closed to hunting.

Week one: August 24th to August 30th.

Week Two: August 25th to September 6th.

Each hunter will be hunting on an actively baited and visited site, regardless of the week you hunt. The bait will be retired for the season at the end of your hunt.

We have been in the Maine Sporting Camp business for more than 25 years and offer the best possible experience for our clients. Your success is our success!

Allagash Headwaters Lodge maintains many more active stands than we have hunters. This allows our guides to move our guests from one stand to another, improving their chances of harvesting a Maine Bear. Taking into consideration wind direction, activity, and cover.

Our Professional Maine Guides begin hunting preparations well before the season starts, preparing shooting lanes, stands, and blinds, and baiting 30 days before the season. We primarily hunt from double tree stands and ground blinds that are positioned to accommodate both left- and right-handed hunters. Catering to archery, handgun, crossbow, and rifle hunters. Rifle hunters will be shooting up to 50 yards, and archery and handgun hunters can expect 20-yard opportunities.

Your Professional Maine Guide will track and retrieve your bear, and upon returning to the Lodge, we will skin and prepare your trophy for transport.

Firearm and archery ranges are available to recheck your weapons upon arrival and during the week of your hunt.

A typical hunting day consists of lunch and prepping for the afternoon hunt. Hunters will leave for their respective baits at a time pre-determined by the guide and hunter for the best success of your hunt. Based on the client’s ability, patience, and the current activity on the bait site. Our Professional Maine Guides put a lot of time and energy into making your hunt the best experience possible. Most bears are taken the last few hours before sunset, but due to the high population of bears in our area, the quality of bait and lack of hunting pressure, they can appear at any time of day. Some morning or all-day hunts may be considered.  Hunters are picked up after dark as soon as possible and returned to the lodge for an evening meal. Harvested animals are retrieved and processed before being placed in our walk-in cooler.

Morning activities available:

Fishing, Canoeing, and exploring the North Maine Woods. Including visiting the fabled Allagash Ghost Trains and the village at Churchill Dam. With minimal pre-planning, we can also arrange white water rafting and seaplane rides.
